Welcome back to the studio! In this video, I am sharing a huge milestone: firing the very first kiln in my new workspace! I honestly felt a mix of nervousness and anticipation for this one.
It’s been almost 10 years since I moved to the U.S., and in all that time, I’ve barely made any functional vessels, focusing mostly on sculpture. But making cups and bowls was my “first bite” of ceramics—the thing that made me fall in love with clay—so I wanted to go back to basics to find my rhythm in this new space.
It’s freezing in the Northeast! A big snowstorm hit, and my shop heater actually broke, so I’m surviving with a space heater and a bucket of hot water.
Tools: I’m using my favorite tungsten steel trimming tool (let me know if I should add this to the shop!).
The Glaze Reveal: There were some “bad surprises” (like that crawling pink glaze) but also some beautiful ones—especially the cup that looks just like a snowy winter lake. Every cup came out with its own unique personality. Which one was your favorite and why? Let me know in the comments!
