Most ceramicists obsess over the glaze recipe — but there’s one variable that can make the exact same recipe look completely different: the mesh size of your silicon carbide. Too large and nothing reacts. Too fine and you lose the rough lava texture entirely. In this video I walk through fresh test tiles from my intensive in Lisbon, showing exactly what happens across the full range — from coarse particles that stay totally unreacted to fine powders that create smooth, delicate bubbles.
Plus: the German silicon carbide that’s giving everything a beautiful brown tone.
