2022 NCECA JURIED STUDENT EXHIBITION
JURIED BY PATSY COX AND ANDRES PAYAN ESTRADA
MARCH 1 – APRIL 5, 2022
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY GALLERY,
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY,
SACRAMENTO, 6000 J STREET
Reception: Friday, March 18, 5:00 –8:00pm
The 2022 NCECA Juried Student Exhibition includes pieces that capture the voices of a generation of makers responding to an unprecedented time, boldly emerging from a complicated world. They are big, unique voices, belting out, uninhibited from their respective perches in ceramics programs across the country, yet, fall conspicuously into conversation with each other. These voices, now planted, are part of the germination process that will prove to educate, inform, and move generations to come, and they are commensurately befitting of this year’s conference title, Fertile Ground, for the 56th conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. This gathering is especially significant as the opportunity to see the work in person may become a reality for many.
To deem monumental the fact that these students found a way to create, ideate, and communicate, considering the restrictions of the past year, is an understatement. Congratulations to all the artists whose work was included in the exhibition and congratulations to all the works that were NOT included in the exhibition. It takes a lot to step forward, and I am so deeply impressed at the courage and initiative taken by everyone who submitted work, whether it’s in the exhibition this year or not. Jury selections rarely have much to do with how amazing an individual work is, but rather, they assemble a cast of characters that somehow manage to capture the zeitgeist. So, to all the students who got their applications in, your power and perseverance are attributes that will carry you into whatever the coming years have to bring us, and remember always, that you are the future. – Patsy Cox
